Exposure to rural, military and indigenous surgery is very limited within most medical school curricula, despite often being the areas which are most in need of additional workforce throughout Australia and New Zealand. In 2022, ASSA is excited to launch our exciting new “Beyond the Sterile Field” mini-series which will delve into these topics and provide students with a unique insight.
We will be running four 1-hour Zoom seminars throughout the year, highlighting a particular area of surgery in each one. A guest speaker will be invited to share stories from their experience in the field, and open Q and A session will allow students to delve deeper into their areas of interest. Our first session on Rural health was a success, with the fantastic Dr Paul Paddle as our guest to introduce students to the many opportunities that exist when working in rural and remote areas.
